Quasicrystal Research

Quasicrystal Research (2011)

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2011 was awarded to Dan Shechtman 'for the discovery of quasicrystals'. Over centuries it was believed that all crystals whose surfaces are comprised of smooth facets are periodic. This means that they are built from a single unit-cell which repeats itself in all three dimensions. Well, this was the opinion thirty years ago! At the beginning of the 1980s, Daniel Shechtman made a fantastic discovery: Highly-ordered, facetted materials which are not periodic. Materials, which at that time were considered to be pure science fiction! At the University of Stuttgart, experiments are performed which allow to research novel, yet unexplored properties of such Quasicrystals. This film presents complex scientific insights in an easy-to-understand and exciting way.
